 Our History
With investment from clean technology visionary, the late John Walton, heir of the founder of Walmart, and significant design optimization by National Academy of Engineering Member, Dr. James U. Lemke, Achates PowerTM was founded in 2004 to build the world's next generation engine architecture. Taking its name from the Greek mythological "faithful friend" Achates, the company's focus has been clear from the start: to build an engine that is light-weight, more fuel efficient, and lower cost. Inspired by Hugo Junkers' Jumo, the most famous engine in diesel aviation history, Achates Power has been developing and testing its unique architecture ever since.
Our Approach
 With a focus on first principles, the Achates Power team, consisting of carefully selected Engineers and Scientists from the world's leading companies, places great emphasis on analytical modeling calibrated with empirical test results. In addition to mainstream development software such as Pro/E, WAVE, ANSYS, and AMESim, the team uses state-of-the-art tools such as KIVA-3V for combustion development, laser doppler anemometry for fuel particle measurement, Altair Optistruct finite element based method for design optimization, Da Vinci DALOC system for lubricant oil consumption measurement, CAI chemoilluminescense NOX analyzer, and Dekati's real-time PM mass monitor. To fabricate and test its products, the team uses its state-of-the-art machine shop, its full-service fuel and instrumentation labs, its computer cluster with nearly 60 cores and its completely instrumented dynamometer. Patents continue to be created, and to-date the team has been granted 6 US Patents with over 200 claims. Another 8 applications and 4 national phases in over 30 jurisdictions have been filed. For select customers to modify the core Achates Power engine to their needs, the team also provides engineering consulting services worldwide.
 Our TAB
With over 200 years of combined experience, the Achates Power Technical Advisory Board consists of Members of the National Academy of Engineering and Fellows of SAE and meets every 6-8 weeks to review the team's findings. On the TAB are Achates Power Founder and CTO, Dr. James U. Lemke, who holds over 80 US Patents for his inventions; Dr. John Beck, retired VP Research at Cummins; Professor David Foster, Chaired Professor at University of Wisconsin at Madison and Director of its Engine Research Center; David Merrion, former Executive VP of Engineering at Detroit Diesel; Mr. Wallace Wade, former Chief Engineer and Technical Fellow, Ford Motor Company and Professor Ward Winer, Chairman Emeritus of Georgia Tech's School of Mechanical Engineering.

Gary Convis, Vice Chairman of Dana Corp and former Chairman, Toyota North America serves on the Board of Directors as an independent Director.
